The state of things.

  • Finished exams! \O/

  • Completed my genetics final in one hour of the three allotted. I have no. idea. how that happened, as I am a very slow writer, and usually there until the bitter end.

  • Due to my finals-related disappearing act, I am behind on the interwebs.

  • But not really on email, because that would mean people were emailing me.

  • Moving! Yes, again. I am only moving a block, but the new place has:
    • A balcony.

    • Windows that aren't south and west facing.</b>
    • Not above the boiler room.

    • Thus, a very good chance of being a livable temperature for the entire summer.

    • Bathroom not in my bedroom.

    • Room for a table.

  • V. excited about moving. Balcony! Table!

  • Moving on Tuesday, after it turns out most of my friends have taken off for the summer. Bah.

  • Start summer work on Tuesday.

  • Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder on Heroes, for those not in the know): too pretty for his own good? Discuss.

  • Seriously, I cannot stop looking at this picture: )

  • Remember when I used to make icons?

Multimedia: Music, Icons.

There was that 'Seven current favourite songs' meme going around for a bit, but I skipped it as some of my current seven favourite songs were uploaded in other music posts, so this is seven songs I enjoy.

1. You Sound Like Louis Burdett - The Whitlams. This is one of my favourite songs of all time. Energetic bluesy rock. (All my friends are fuck-ups, but they're fun to have around) Which really says it all.

2. Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall. Upbeat folk (rock). (I said/Don't look back, just keep on walking)

3. Jupiter - Gustav Holst. Classical. I have a real soft spot for all of The Planets.

4. The Story - 30 Seconds to Mars. I... don't just like them because I have this thing about Jared Leto. Really. I don't even care if liking them damages my indie cred. Enjoyable techno-rock. A Beautiful Lie may not be one the albums I'd take to a desert island, but it is one I listen to a lot around the house. (I've been thinking of everything/I used to want to be)

5. Santa's Going to Kick Your Ass - The Arrogant Worms. Because it's Christmas season, and this song makes me laugh. Grab it if you like the Worms, Christmas, angry reindeer, or if you haven't heard the Arrogant Worms.

6. Handshake - Metric. I've pimped Metric before. Low-fi indie. (Buy this car to drive to work/Drive to work to pay for this car)

7. Sweet Home Country Grammar - Skynard vs. Nelly. I have only recently discovered Mashups, and this one is probably my favourite. I know, I wouldn't have thought it would work, either.

Let's make this multimedia. Icon linkage as well. 20 Due South icons.

3 Things

First: It's been a while, so music uploads. I am as eclectic as always.
1. If I Wrote You (Live) - Dar Williams. How much do I love Dar? Enough that this is the third consecutive set of mp3s that include a song by her. Melodic. Gorgeous voice, lyrics, instrumentals.
2. XO - Fallout Boy. Ish music. Indie(ish) rock. Upbeat(ish).
3. Radio/Video - System of a Down. I was suspicious of the new SoaD album, too. BYOB (the first single) didn't really grab me. The rest of the album, which I bummed off my brother, is very, very good. Experimental metal.
4. Somebody More Like You - Nickel Creek. A modern acoustic trio, with a guitar, a violin, and a mandolin pulled together into a rich, deep sound.
5. Hello - Poe. One of my favourite female vocalists. Haunting.
6. How to Explain - The Cat Empire. Fusion music. Swing/rock/jazz/dance. I adore them, and I recommend giving them a try -- if you don't like them, you don't like them, but I think they're a real treat.

I was going to stop there, but then I realized that Metric is coming through town on Monday, and I get to see them live again (so much love! Last time, they were through with Billy Talent.)
Bonus: 7. Wet Blanket - Metric. Low-fi indie. Great vocals. They grow on you like fungi. (Saying I'm wrong/To want more than a folk song)

Second: 20 Doctor Who icons.

Third: Nabbed from [info]brooklinegirl, who had the bright idea to take out the silly questions and the part ordering people around. If you want to post this in your LJ, too, that's cool. If not, also cool.

Comment and:
1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
4. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
5. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.

So I think this is going to be how I handle it: I'm going to cross post icons from my icon journal only when I know that there are a number of people here into the fandom. There are icons there that never make it here, but the last time I posted a poll, the overwhelming answer as to what I should do about icons was: It's your journal, why are you asking me.

Thusly: Firefly actress icons.

I never really used the icon journal -- constantly logging in and out got on my nerves. [info]iconsbycherry is where they're all being stored now, and it's a very lonely community.

Baaah.

Two first icons I made, back when I was using Power Point to deal with graphics:

Two most recent icons I've made:

I like to think I've improved somewhat.

Actually, I stil like the second of the Power Point ones. Probably because I didn't do anything to it -- just spend waaaay too much time trying to crop it correctly in PP, since the outside border added another white strip, and you had to c/p it back from Applework and recrop it after the border. Ah, the fun.

Icon Resources

Now, I know there are a few icon makers on my friendslist.

Most people who make any amount of icons have icon resource posts, just to lend a hand (and because originators often ask for credit). I've only recently really started to figure out PhotoShop, and accumulated brushes, etc., which require credit, so I'm posting this now.

It will be linked in my memories, and back-updated as I acquire new resources.

Please, don't take this as an indicator that I think my icons are, you know, good enough that people would be wondering what font or brush I used...

General Brushes
Brushes by [info]teh_indy, here, by [info]crumblingwalls here, and [info]dark_soul_lost here.

Specific Brush Types
