Without knowing you, I think I can already say one thing about you: you are awesome. )

Fic: Life in a Glass House [Entourage, Eric/Vince]

Title: Life in a Glass House
Fandom: Entourage
Warnings: R for language.
Notes: Written for [info]black_eyedgirl in Yuletide 2008. It was my first attempt at this fandom as well, but it's a bit farther outside my usual, irregular fannish circles. It has been fun, if rather nerve-wracking.

Eric is too young to be having a midlife crisis.

It's the same fucking thing every time.

Fic: A Mirror of the Trackless Sky [Watchmen]

Title: A Mirror of the Trackless Sky
Fandom: Watchmen
Notes: Written for Essie in Yuletide 2008. [info]lyssie provided a fantastic beta for me, despite lack of familiarity with the fandom.

Yuletide Reveals!

I had the chance to write two pieces this year, both in fandoms I'd never gotten a crack at before. Those two posts are to follow.

I'm afraid I failed to compile a recs list before author names went live, but I really want to take a chance to mention the absolutely amazing stories I received.

This year, my request was in the 'Three remaining unfilled requests' list up until the last minute. I think this means I was somewhat troublesome for the fantastic organizers, for which I am sorry. On a selfish level, however, I have no problem with this whatsoever: it means I got four absolutely amazing stories. Three were Chronicles of the Kencyrath: That Which Preserves, a lush piece with gorgeous undertones, in which Kindrie contemplates the mercy of murder; the warm A Quiet Place, in which Kindrie finally gets a much-deserved moment of peace (<33); and Sins of the Fathers, a short, sharp, and chilling bit of reflection. I also received a Mambo Italiano piece, You Mixed Up Siciliano, which is a fabulous post-movie piece with a Nino who's finally come to terms with himself reaching out to the one friend who'd understand.

Hurrah for Yuletide!

A Post of Many Colours

A very happy (and similarly, very belated birthday) to two of my most favourite people on the internet -- [info]thefourthvine and [info]tellitslant!

Things which are awesome: for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I obtained funding for a laptop, and am now the proud owner of a Toshiba M750 tablet! I can write on the screen! I have never owned a PC before, though, so am curious as to what applications my more experienced friends think are necessary. Now, this is going to be a school machine -- I'm planning on keeping all my media on my desktop computer, so I don't need recommendations for vidding software or anything of the like. Neat or useful program recommendations would be awesome, as well as resources. If anyone uses a good reference/paper database program, I would love to hear it. Unfortunately, Papers (which is awesome), only has a Mac version.

And, somewhat belatedly:

Dear Yuletide Author: while I am clearly made of fail for not getting this up sooner... )

Dear Yuletide Author:

Dearest Yuletide Author;

You are most decidedly made of awesome. )

In other news, my paid LJ time is about to expire, so I am all a-twitter to find out which five LJ icons I shall be left with. Maybe LJ will look deep into my soul to decide.

All shall witness my shame, and LOL.

I am looking back over my site, and it occurs to me that I really need to trim out some of the dead weight. I'm looking at some of the fic between my fingers, actually, what with the need to cover my face in shame.

It's rather interesting, actually, to see how my writing has evolved. I started writing fic when I was 15 (15! Gosh, I'm old now.) Some of my ideas were not entirely awful, aside from lack of logic, and I can see places where my writing style was beginning to develop. I almost want to go back, rip them to pieces, and try to insert a lower level of suck. I had no concept of pacing, and for some reason felt the need to describe everything that everyone did and every step they took. Oh, god, the prose. The horrible, awful, clunky prose, and my need to spell out everyone's accents phonetically.

I was so very proud. *dies*

SO MUCH BADNESS. I am cutting this to spare your brains. )

The stream of consciousness ones are the worst, though. No plot, just really, really emo reflection. People, seriously. I write fic where Emma Frost CUTS HERSELF. I had blocked this from my mind completely, to hold onto some shred of self-respect.

Monologues were never my friend, m'kay? )

Why on earth did this stuff seem to resonate with so many people, OMG?

Forgive me, please, for inflicting this stuff on the internet in the first place?

I think that today is a day where we should all share our shame.

Between finals, moving, and being temporarily netless, it appears that I completely forgot to post this. Ever.

Full Circle (World on Your Back)

'Tis PotC fic, for [info]remix_redux. Elizabeth-centric, post-Dead Man's Chest. Largely Will/Elizabeth, but with a generous side of Jack. PG. Beta by the fantabulous [info]sprat. The original story, by Molly, may be found here.

Look, Ma, FIC!

Taking a bit more shameless advantage of my flist -- I don't suppose someone would have a few minutes to rip apart a Nathan-centric, post-Parasite story?

It has just been one of those weeks, yo. Where absolutely nothing you do is quite good enough. When all your jokes fall flat, when you lose your words every time you try to say something important, when you didn't do as well on any of the assignments or labs or exams you got back as you should have. One of those weeks when you can't even be on time for the bus.

I have, at various points, attempted to do some writing. This is of note because it appears I have not posted anything since August. The entirety of what I have written is this: Rusty Ryan was thirteen when he lifted his first wallet. It wasn't the worst thing he'd ever do for money, but at the time he felt pretty badly about it.

This is very old, actually. Early S3 BSG, Baltar, will likely never be finished because I decided that Gauis-the-Cylon was boring and negated his character arc. Also, what exists is not exactly excellent.  )

I think that my mojo is missing. Missing, or perhaps dead. Despite all attempts, I feel rather unfannish lately. Alas! Woe! I am about to take something stabby to the writing section of my brain.

Yuletide recs, hurrah! 12 stories, 10 fandoms.

A Thousand Miles (Avatar: the Last Airbender*) Iroh and Zuko, immediately after the Agni Kai. This story breaks me in the best possible way. Iroh does what only he can, and Zuko is so very adrift and hurting. This is full of wonderful little details, and I think this is probably the way that it happened.

Days of rest and gladness (Avatar: the Last Airbender) Momo! In a direct contrast to the above story, this is sweet and warm, like a summer's day or a favourite blanket.

A Jianghu Fairytale (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai, how they met and how they will be remembered. Wistful and restrained.

Lives by Breaking (Chronicles of Narnia) Loss and love and forgetting. It never was a fairy tale, and this story gets that, gets being an adult in the body of a child and a child in the body of a monarch.

Into Seas Without a Shore (Dead Like Me) I may be biased here, because this was the story written for me, and I love it dearly. George, Joy, and Betty. It's about holding on and moving forward and letting go. There's a bit for everyone here, and the dialogue is perfect.

The Manipulated Dead (Donnie Darko) Sharp and twisted, just like the movie. It's like living inside of Donnie's head, leaving you off-balance and looking for something solid.

How Everything Turns Away (Heroes) Nathan, Daedalus, family, and hope at the end of all things.

"And the church bells softly chime." (Life on Mars) I'm picky about LoM fic, but this is just lovely. Perfect Chris voice, perfect Sam and Gene interaction.

His Girl on the Other Side of the World (Pattern Recognition) Sweet and floaty, with gorgeous prose.

Capriciousness (American Gods) Bast, in the new world. The entire piece feels delightfully feline.

Deep with the First Dead Lies London's Daughter (Torchwood) Ianto and Jack, immediately after Canary Wharf. Sharp like glass.

Rubik's (Torchwood) Gwen in pieces, and Suzie.

* It occurs to me, looking back at my LJ, that I have not actually mentioned my growing adoration for Avatar. It makes me want to talk in a "______ is love" sort of manner. I really need to find and flist some Avatar people so that I can express my squee.

Whee!

Done! Done meetings, done school, done reports. I have no responsibilities for the next week and a half. Except for work, of course. And looking for a summer job. And I some how managed to get myself put on a task force and another committee, but those don't kick in until after next term starts.

I was doing my year-end fic roundup, and I realized that I haven't done or said anything fannish since August. Um, oops? It certain explains the mass defriendings. I will try my best to less boring from now on.

Year-end fic roundup: Alphabetically by fandom, with bonus (brief) commentary.
