Vid: Dying [Torchwood]

Title: Dying
Fandom: Torchwood
Music: Hole
Rating: 14A
Character: Team
Spoilers: Season One
Summary: It gets under your skin.

Links: Download (38 MB, DIVX, zipped) | Stream (BAM) | Stream (Blip)

Notes: This is the first of two vids I made for this year's VividCon -- the second should be up tomorrow. This was for the fabulous [info]laurashapiro's Newbies Rock vid show.

There is no way that I can provide enough thanks for [info]elynross for this one, as she went far, far above and beyond the call of duty for any beta. Without her, it would have been a much different vid.

Wow. That's just very, very *right,* in a way I'm not sure I can articulate at the moment. It's just fabulous, and it captures that sense of what they lose by doing this job so very well.

I saw this vid in the VVC show on Friday, and have been waiting all weekend for you to put it up and/or [info]greensilver to distribute the DVD set because I was dying to see it again (I also guessed your challenge vid was by you based on having seen this one). I'm too tired to say more right now, but it's really just an incredible vid... so thank you!

Oh, wow. I really didn't expect anyone to figure out I was the originator of my Challenges, if only because I wouldn't expect my name to pop to mind in general.

Thank you for your kind words. *G*

Boy, am I glad I finished watching Torchwood tonight so I could segue straight on to watching this vid.

Seriously, I can't believe you're still a "newbie" in technical terms! This is some seriously fantastic editing, and some seriously beautiful sentiment. You managed to capture so much of their pain and horror (not to mention all the twisted interrelatedness of all their relationships) in under four minutes, and it simply flows like a dream. Brilliant job. I loved it!

Thank you ever so much.

I've been lucky -- I have good software, I'm working with interesting footage, and [info]elynross and [info]laurashapiro have both been incredibly, incredibly helpful to me. Even so, the learning curve involved with vidding can be rather frustrating for me, so you have no idea how much I appreciate hearing that I'm making my way up that particular slope.

I was really working to build a dark atmosphere here, and I'm so glad to hear that it worked without becoming monotonous.

Thank you ever so much for your kind words.

This is fab, hon! Love the editing, the choices, the clips; and you know that four minutes of Torchwood's not my thing anymore but you did it well, so that's extra something. (And you included Ianto shooting Owen, bless, that's the best bit of the whole season). Great work!

I am absolutely in love with this vid. You've captured so well what I love about the show, with a perfect song, and amazing editing. Also, and I'm not sure if I'm explaining this right, it feels really tightly focused. Like, it's the show distilled down to these few minutes without a single unnecessary clip. Awesome.

Hi! I don't watch Torchwood, but I was both horrified and deeply moved by this vid. Horrified by the nonstop (in the vid, anyway) pain that this group of characters faces on the job, and moved by the deep love and compassion that they obviously feel for one another.

Very well done!!!

Hi. I went looking for Torchwood-specific vids (not those that use footage from both DW and TW). This was definitely the best of the bunch I've found.

So in a short... three months ago, I discovered Torchwood and realized that the short seasons of British TV are hell on greedy fans. In a desperate attempt to fill the void, I started watching vids and landed on yours. Due to living on a parallel reality, I had never heard a Hole song on my life, and so I was sort of blown out in both accounts: the haunting vid and the haunting song.
Torchwood seems to fit was well with complete spoof vids like misanthro's "It's in His Kiss" and to total angst and drama like yours. But when I watched the S2 finale, guess which one I was compelled to re-watch? I've also selfmemed myself to give thanks where thanks are due, and that's why I'm writing this too-long comment and my warmest thanks with it for this small, bright, dark jewel of a vid. If your external drive ever restarts (+ouch*) and you feel like vidding again, you've got a certain audience.

I appologize for the tardiness of my response, but it appears that gmail was eating my LJ comment notifications.

Thank you ever so much for watching, and for taking the time to leave such a kind piece of feedback. I think you're right, in that there are two completely separate ways to approach TW -- there's not much in between ground to work from. To be honest, in my mind the song fit so well that I was almost wary of using it -- it was almost too apt. It certainly helped me with setting the atmosphere for the vid itself.

that the short seasons of British TV are hell on greedy fans.
It's quite a shift from the standard 24-episode North American seasons. Personally, I think I preffer the shorter seasons, because when done right, it forces the writers to cut out the fat. If you want to tell a good story, there's not much room for the non-essentials, something I think Life on Mars used to particularly good effect.

If your external drive ever restarts (+ouch*)

All external drives have been found and verified! Thank you for your concern. *g*
